How I work?
See the fuller picture
Look beyond the presenting challenge. Understand what may really be happening.
Context matters
Nothing happens in a vacuum. Culture, relationships and wider systems shape the situation.
Move forward with purpose
Turn insight into focused, effective action.
See the fuller picture. Recognise your scope for action. Move forward purposefully.
The HILMA Framework helps professionals and managers understand the whole person and situation—not only the question, behaviour or problem that first becomes visible.
By bringing personal, cultural, relational, organisational and systemic influences into view, HILMA supports more informed choices, purposeful adaptation and focused, effective action.
The framework connects five interrelated elements:
- Holistic Awareness
- Intercultural, Contextual & Systems Insight
- Life & Career Direction
- Mapping Skills, Possibilities, Networks, Gaps & Support
- Action & Adaptation
The HILMA Framework.
Through years of working closely with international and interculturally positioned professionals, I developed the Holistic Intercultural Life Mastery Approach (HILMA).
HILMA supports professionals—and managers leading international talent—in making sense of complex situations and translating that understanding into practical action.
It is a dynamic, human-centred framework that looks beyond the challenge that first becomes visible. It considers the whole person—including their strengths, beliefs, emotions, experiences, identity and aspirations—within the personal, cultural, relational, organisational and systemic environments in which their life and work unfold.
By bringing these influences into view, HILMA helps people:
- Make sense of what is happening
- Clarify what matters
- Recognise what they can influence
- Identify realistic possibilities, resources and support
- Translate insight into focused, purposeful action
- Learn and adapt as circumstances evolve
HILMA is not a rigid or one-size-fits-all process. The framework responds to the person, question and context.
Coaching, consulting, and support for professionals ‘who are from elsewhere,’ or who are seen as such,© as well as for intercultural teams and organisations with a global workforce.

Its purpose
What it enables
When it is overlooked
Holistic Awareness
Seeing the whole person—not only the visible question, behaviour, problem or role.
A fuller understanding of the person’s strengths, experiences, beliefs, emotions, identity, aspirations and underlying needs.
The person may be reduced to the problem, while important strengths, experiences and needs remain unseen.
Intercultural, Contextual & Systems Insight
Seeing the wider environment and the person’s position within it.
Understanding how personal, cultural, relational, organisational and systemic influences may be shaping the situation. This supports multiple perspectives and more accurate interpretation.
The visible issue may be treated as the entire problem. The situation may be personalised, stereotyped or misunderstood.
Life & Career Direction
Defining what meaningful progress or success looks like—and what does and does not deserve attention.
Greater clarity about what matters and where to go, so that attention, energy and resources can be focused purposefully.
Priorities and efforts may remain scattered, and valuable resources may be spent on what matters least.
Mapping Skills, Possibilities, Networks, Gaps & Support
Exploring what the person brings, what is possible, who and what can help, and what may still be missing.
Connecting relevant skills and strengths with realistic possibilities, useful networks, available resources and appropriate support while identifying remaining gaps.
Misalignment, missed possibilities and overlooked support may make progress unnecessarily difficult, stressful or costly.
Action & Adaptation
Acting intentionally, observing what happens and adjusting accordingly.
Turning insight into purposeful action, learning from the response and adapting along the way to create sustainable progress.
Valuable time, energy and resources may be spent without creating meaningful movement.
One framework, two applications
HILMA provides the shared foundation for both Global Career Support services. It is applied differently according to the person, question and context.
For experienced professionals
HILMA helps international and interculturally positioned professionals explore career, growth and professional leadership questions without separating the individual from the realities surrounding them.
It can support professionals in:
- Clarifying their direction
- Understanding cultural and contextual dynamics
- Recognising their strengths and possibilities
- Identifying useful networks, resources and support
- Making more informed choices
- Translating insight into meaningful action
For managers leading international talent
HILMA helps managers look beyond the first interpretation of an international employee’s communication, behaviour or performance.
It brings the employee, manager, relationship, team, organisation and wider context into view. This helps managers:
Ask better questions
Consider multiple possible influences
Avoid premature assumptions or cultural stereotypes
Interpret workplace situations more accurately
Recognise their scope for action
Take more informed and effective leadership action
My consultative coaching and facilitation approach
At Global Career Support, I use a consultative approach: a flexible, goal-oriented partnership that combines the reflective power of coaching with relevant expertise, practical frameworks and informed feedback.
This means I do more than ask questions. Where it adds value, I may:
- Share an observation
- Introduce a relevant framework
- Offer a cultural, contextual or systemic perspective
- Provide informed feedback
- Help identify possible routes, resources or sources of support
- Invite you to examine an assumption or familiar explanation
At the same time, you retain ownership of your question, decisions and actions.
My approach offers both a wider lens through which to understand the context surrounding a question and a map for identifying realistic ways forward.
You remain the person choosing the destination and taking the steps. My role is to help you understand the terrain, recognise what may be shaping the journey and navigate with greater clarity, confidence and intention.
This approach is especially valuable in career, leadership and intercultural contexts, where progress may require both deeper understanding and insight into the environments and systems being navigated.
What you can expect
You can expect:
- Reflective questions that deepen awareness and understanding
- Relevant cultural, contextual and systemic insights
- Practical frameworks, perspectives and possibilities
- Honest observations and thoughtful challenge
- Space to decide what fits you and your situation
- A clear focus on decisions, action, learning and adaptation
I move intentionally between reflective coaching, facilitation and practical input according to what the person, question and context require.
I will not make decisions for you or prescribe a predetermined answer. My role is to help you see more clearly, consider relevant perspectives and possibilities, and determine how you want to move forward.
Professional grounding.
